The City Attorney's client is the City of Watertown, a municipal corporation existing under the laws of the State of South Dakota. The City Attorney advises the Mayor, the City Council, and city personnel on all legal matters affecting the City. The City Attorney prosecutes and defends lawsuits in which the City of Watertown is a party, and serves as the City's prosecutor for violations of City ordinance.

The City Attorney is prohibited from providing legal advice to the public or to any party other than the client, the municipal corporation of the City of Watertown.
