Troy VanDusen Bio
Sergeant Troy VanDusen was born and raised in Sterling, Colorado. In 1989 he moved to Watertown, SD where he graduated from Watertown Senior High School in 1991. He began his law Enforcement career in 1994 when he joined the Watertown Police Department's Police Reserve program. In 1996, Troy left his career as a radio broadcaster and joined the Watertown Police Department as a communications officer. In 1997, Troy accepted a position as a police patrol officer. He graduated from the Law Enforcement Training Academy in Pierre later that year. As a patrol officer Troy established the department's police explorer program and was the program advisor from 1997 to 2007. This program has proven valuable to the department and remains in existence today. In 2000, VanDusen was assigned to the position of Detective until he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant in 2002. Troy’s duties included patrol and administration. In 2008, VanDusen became a Police Service Dog handler (Turk) and performed those duties until 2012.
Sgt. VanDusen has also supervised the Investigations Division. He is one of two Public Information Officers for the department and sits on both the Budget Committee and Policy Committee. He is also active as an Advanced DUI Detection and Apprehension Instructor and Crisis Negotiator for the SWAT Team.
Sergeant VanDusen is a graduate of the 248th Session of the FBI's National Academy in Quantico, Virginia. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Business, a degree in General Law Enforcement from the Police Sciences Institute and is also a graduate of the National Institute of Justice Rural Law Enforcement Technology Institute. Troy and his wife Carol have two daughters, Megan and Lauren, all are very active in the Watertown Community. Troy is also a Codington County Commissioner, representing District 4.
