FUN RUNSix years ago, the Watertown DASH initiative was implemented at the Watertown Police Department. This initiative has made a difference in the lives of local youth and their families and we look forward to another great year in 2018.
Watertown DASH is an acronym for Drug Free, Alcohol Free, Safe & Healthy and the mission is “To challenge community partnerships to lead by example and to empower Watertown youth to choose to live healthy and positive lifestyles”. Kids learn by the examples and expectations set for them by family and society. It seems that on a national level a social norm has developed that “kids will be kids” when it comes to alcohol and even drug use as if it is a “rite of passage”. As a community, we need to focus on changing that social norm and look at what we can do to protect the health and safety of our youth. The Watertown Police Department, along with community partners like the Watertown Healthy Youth Coalition, would like to stop this trend. We are reaching out to local businesses and community members to join this initiative and help us raise the bar for youth and empower them to make safe and healthy choices.
We have had some great supporters of Watertown DASH over the years and we wouldn’t have been able to keep the initiative going without their support. Their generosity has been greatly appreciative and to see the community care about the local youth of Watertown is heartwarming. In 2018, we will continue to provide safe and healthy activities for the kids and to continue to promote family oriented events. Being present in children’s lives plays a huge factor in their lives. If you haven't had a chance to look at the Watertown DASH Facebook page, we strongly suggest that you do and just look at the photos from our events. To see the smiles and accomplished looks on the children's faces is enough to prove that we are doing a good thing. Our child participant numbers continue to grow each year. Please consider supporting Watertown DASH in 2018.
We are still in the planning stages of our 2018 activities/events that we host or sponsor but here is a list of some that we know will be occurring: Spring Into Action 5K/2 Mile Walk-a family oriented event to bring awareness to Child Abuse Prevention; 7th Annual Fun Run-open to ages 5-12 for an evening of running races, fitness stations and “just for fun” stations; DARE-classes are taught to 5th graders at all the elementary schools in Watertown; Watertown Recreational Trail Challenge-track your exercise plan and keep track of how many miles you put on using the beautiful trail system; $500 Scholarship-presented to a graduating Senior from the Watertown High School; Teen Police Academy-designed for youth ages 13-18; DASH to Kampeska Freedom Run-a family oriented 5K race to promote health and fitness; F.O.P. Kids Triathlon-open to ages 7-12 for a morning of bike riding, swimming and running; Turkey Day 5K/2 Mile Walk-a long time tradition and a huge family oriented event in Watertown to promote health and fitness. We are going to try and schedule a new event this year called a Duathlon which is a running and bicycling event. We are always looking for new and fun events to add throughout the year and would love to hear any suggestions.
