Watertown Regional Airport New Terminal Announced

The City of Watertown is excited to announce that we have been notified by the Federal Aviation Administration that our community has been selected to receive nine million dollars in the form of an FAA grant for a new terminal building and site utilities at the Watertown Regional Airport.

Our terminal project earned federal support in a highly competitive arena in which 10 billion dollars of projects were requested and only 500 million dollars of funding was available.  Our community earned this project due to its support of our commercial air service and design requirements that our aging terminal could no longer support.

The new terminal and site utilities is just the first phase of the terminal project.  We anticipate that we will receive funding for the remaining site work (parking lot, apron, and taxiway) in either 2020/2021.  If all goes as planned, we expect the new terminal will be ready for operations by the late 2021 to early 2022.

Mayor Caron remarked, “The airport is a critically important element of our community’s economic health. We can thank Senator Thune, the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation, and all others who assisted in landing this grant.  A new terminal is urgently needed so this is great news for Watertown!”

Airport manager Todd Syhre stated, “This is a wonderful opportunity for the City of Watertown.  The growth that we have shown in the past couple years with enplanements is major factor in this decision.  This is an almost immediate influx of nine million dollars into the community with more to come in the second phase.  I want to thank the citizens of Watertown and surrounding areas for getting us to this point by utilizing the airport for leisure and business travel.”

Airport Board President Shan Kruse stated, “This is a very big deal.  There were billions of dollars of airport projects submitted and our community earned this!  This new terminal is just another indication of how great this community is and this investment in our future will enable even more successes for our Watertown and regional businesses, communities and individuals.”

Public Works Director Heath VonEye stated, “The progression of this project and the realization of this funding would not have been possible without the hard work of our dedicated Airport Manager, our Airport Board, and our Consultants, Mead&Hunt and Helms & Associates.”
