[ARCHIVED] WFR Responds to bale fire

April 23, 2020

Watertown Fire Units were dispatched at 2pm Thursday afternoon to a bale fire in a field near 16574 455th Ave.  When units arrived on the scene they were informed that a farmer raising switch grass was conducting a prescribed burn when the wind switched and caused the fire to jump a fire break line and get into a bale pile. The pile was on the field very near a shelter belt of trees.  WFR crews used hand tools to roll out the bales to shorten the burn time and reduce the chances that the fire would get into the trees.  There were about 25 bales in the row.  There were no injuries on the fire ground.  Fire crews were on scene for about 4.5 hours.

WFR would like to remind farmers that plan on conducting a control burn to call Watertown Police Department prior to starting their burn.  Current and future weather conditions can be accessed by calling the National Weather Service.  They can give hourly weather predictions including wind speed and direction.
