On April 27, 2020 the WPD announced we would be increasing traffic enforcement within the city limits with help from a SD Highway Safety grant. This grant provides funds for equipment and overtime hours to improve safety on the roadways. Overtime officers teamed up with on-duty personnel with a goal of improving safety and quality of life for all Watertown citizens.
From April 27 to May 4, 2020, the WPD conducted targeted patrols in various areas of Watertown. During that time, 161 traffic citations and 277 warnings were issued. The warnings were for various traffic and vehicle equipment violations.
The following traffic citations were issued; 47 Speeding, 55 No Seat Belt, 5 No Insurance, 12 DUIs, 4 No Driver’s license (DL), 3 Revoked DL, 7 Suspended DL, 1 Violation of DL Restrictions, 1 No Motorcycle Endorsement, 5 Exhibition Driving, 3 Careless Driving, 1 Reckless Driving, 4 Stop Sign violations, 1 Stop Light violation, 2 Muffler violations, 1 Overdriving the Road Conditions, 3 Failed to Yield, 3 Open Containers in MV, 1 Littering from a MV, and 2 Impeding the Flow of Traffic.
The WPD will be continuing increased enforcement. We are asking the public to please drive safe. With the nicer weather, there are more pedestrians, including children walking, running, and biking on our roadways.
