Shortly before 0800 hours yesterday morning, Watertown Fire Rescue responded to a possible gas leak in the area of 101 N. Broadway. WFR was requested by Municipal Utilities.
A strong smell of natural gas was reported outside the building. After a short investigation, Municipal Utilities along with WFR had determined that the gas smell was most likely coming from the building at 101 1st Ave. NW. To take proper precautions against an explosion, the neighboring businesses were evacuated and 1st Ave. NW was shut down from Broadway to 2nd St. NW for a short time. The danger of explosion was mitigated and municipal utilities began investigating possible causes. Shortly after 0900 hours, WFR cleared scene as all imminent danger was gone.
