[ARCHIVED] WFR Responds to ruptured sprinkler pipe

Watertown Fire Rescue was dispatched to 500 16th Ave NE for a broken sprinkler pipe that caused the ceiling to collapse into a resident's room at 1510 Sunday afternoon (2-14-2021).  Upon arrival crews found that a sprinkler pipe in the attic had froze and caused activation of the sprinkler system.  The flowing water caused the sheetrock in the room to collapse.  There was no resident in the room at the time of the collapse.  The water flowed out into the hallway and a few adjacent rooms.  WPD, Codington County SO and WFR EMS personnel assisted staff in moving residents to a dry warm area of the facility.  WFR Fire crews were able to shut down the sprinkler system to stop the flow of water.  There were no injuries to staff or residents of the facility, and the displaced residents were being moved to other rooms in the facility or staying with family until the damage could be cleaned and repaired.

Crews were on scene for about one hour.  WFR was assisted by WPD, Codington County SO and Codington County Emergency Management.
