On 5/19/2021 at 03:45 AM, Watertown Police and Watertown Fire Rescue responded to the 10 BLK of 1st Ave NE for a motor vehicle crash report with injuries.

A Black 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander was traveling westbound on 1st Ave NE. A Pearl 2011 International Garbage Truck pulled out of a private driveway on the north side of 1st Ave NE. The garbage truck driver failed to stop before entering the roadway from a private driveway and failed to yield to the Mitsubishi Outlander. The garbage truck collided with the Outlander in the westbound driving lane.

The garbage truck driver was identified as David Case, a 63-year-old male of Watertown. The garbage truck had a second worker on the back that was not injured. David was cited for Failure to Stop From Driveway Before Entering Roadway (SDCL 32-29-2.2).

The driver of the Mitsubishi Outlander was identified as Daniel Scholtes, a 22-year-old male of Watertown. A DUI investigation was conducted, and Daniel was arrested for DUI 1st Offense (SDCL 3223-1) and Driving Without a Valid License (SDCL 32-12-22). A passenger in the Outlander received minor injuries as a result of the accident.

The Mitsubishi Outlander received extensive passenger-side damage and was towed from the scene.

Daniel was released on a PR bond.
