WFR Responds to COOP Elevator for Fire

elevator

At about 9:00am Friday Watertown Fire Rescue was called to The Watertown COOP Elevator on Burlington Drive for a fire.  Upon arrival, COOP employees and WFR firefighters made their way to the top of one of the main storage silos.  On top of the silo, above the distributor floor, crews gained access to a cat walk via a cage ladder.  On top of the elevator, at a height of about 150', crews found a hot spot and some smoldering grain inside the elevator, near a motor associated with the bucket ladder used to raise grain to the top of the elevator.  Working with elevator staff, firefighters were able to carefully extinguish the fire and remove the charred grain.  Crews were on scene for about 3 hours.  The cause of the fire was not determined, as no solid cause was able to be found at the time of the press release.  There were no injuries reported.  WFR responded with a fire truck, ambulance, and a command staff vehicle, totaling 6 staff members.  WFR would like to thank the Wtn COOP Elevator for their assistance.
