Watertown Fire Rescue Responds to a 25 Gallon Gasoline Spill at Cenex on Highway 20. WFR was dispatched at approximately 12 pm for a gas spill coming from a gas pump. Upon arrival on scene crews found that a car had struck a gas pump causing a leak from the underground pipe connected to the pump. The Gas ran out from the base of the pump and onto the cement, where it was able to run into the gutter on highway 20. WFR also used absorbent mats and absorbent booms to collect the Petroleum products from the water runoff. WFR also used floor dry to build a berm in the Cenex parking lot to prevent further runoff into the street. The Watertown street department responded with a sanding truck and sand was used to soak up the spill gasoline. The street department then used a street sweeper to clean up the sand. The contaminated sand, absorbent mats, and absorbent booms will be properly disposed of. Watertown Fire Rescue was assisted on scene by the Watertown Police Department, The Watertown Street Department. Watertown Waste Water, and Codington County Emergency Management. Watertown Fire Rescue would like to remind Citizens to slow down during the winter months especially when the roads are icy.
